Khanauri is a small town located in the southeast part of Punjab. It lies at a distance of around 224km from the national capital of New Delhi and is a Nagar Panchayat in the Sangrur District of Punjab. Primarily a rural town, Khanauri is one of the many quintessential agrarian Punjabi towns along the southern border of Punjab.

The district of Sangrur has been divided into six Tehsils which are, Khanauri, Sunam, Malerkotta, Lehra, Moonak and Dhuri. Khanauri is a Nagar Panchayat and the district Headquarters of Khanauri. The Nagar Panchayat is divided into 13 wards for which elections are held every 5 years. The Khanauri Nagar Panchayat administers over 2,628 houses and it is authorised to build roads, maintain water supply to the residents and collect taxes. The Deputy Commissioner of the Sangrur District is the head of the District Administration and is a functionary of the State Government, under the administrative control of Divisional Commissioner, Patiala. The Deputy Commissioner also performs the roles of District Collector and the District Magistrate.

Geography of Khanauri

The Tehsil of Khanauri lies in the southern region of the Sangrur district and is about 55km from the Sangrur town. Khanauri is located at 29°50'13.7"N 76°06'40.8"E. It is very close to the border with the state of Haryana and on the north, Lehra. To the north of Khanauri lies Patran Tehsil, Tohana Tehsil in the west, and Narwana Tehsil in the south. Climate of Khanauri can be described as hot and dry as it is characterised by a very brief and sporadic Monsoon. Just like the Summer, the winter here is also quite severe with the mercury plummeting to cold temperatures. The region sees three seasons annually. The Summer sets in by the end of March and lasts until the end of June. July to October are the months of the south – west Monsoon which is followed by the Winter, usually setting in in November and lasting until the end of March. The district of Sangrur witnesses a sporadic and weak Monsoon and on an average there are about 27 rainy days a year. The average rainfall that the district receives is around 590mm a year, with July proving to be the wettest month. Sometimes pre-monsoon storms are experienced in the month of June as heat waves create conditions suitable for them.

The population residing in the borders of the Khanauri Nagar Panchayat, as per the 2011 Population Census, stands at 14,096 of which 7,348 are males while 6,748 are females. The child population (age 0-6) stands at 1926 which is 13.66% of total population of the Khanauri Nagar Panchayat. In the Khanauri Nagar Panchayat, the Female Sex Ratio is relatively high at 918, which is higher than the State Average of 895. On the other hand, the Child Sex Ratio, as seems to be the trend in the state of Punjab, is lower at 836, which is lower than the State Average of 846. The population of the Scheduled Castes (SC) constitutes to 4,602 which makes for 32.65% of the entire population of the Khanauri Nagar Panchyayat. There are no Scheduled Tribes in the Khanauri Nagar Panchyayat.
